Fateful Night Story Contest

For those of you who have read my debut novel Fateful Night I have a fun challenge!

Each of you have an opportunity to write a short story connected to Fateful Night. Your stories will be judged by the crowd, and there's even a special opportunity for you writers which I'll mention below...

You are welcome to write a short story of whatever length you like. I'll post all of them, and none will be too long in my opinion. Here are a couple of classifications for length to give you a good picture.

Mini-Saga:
A mini-saga is a short story told in exactly 50 words. It is a test in brevity– saying a lot with a little.

Flash Fiction:
Flash fiction refers to an extremely short piece of literature. It has no widely accepted length, but has a debated cap of between 300 and 1000 words. Within flash fiction is a special carve-out for micro-fiction, which is 100 words. With only a few sentences, micro-fiction requires tight writing with a swift opening and succinct ending.

Classic Short Story:
The classic short story weighs in at 1,000 words up to 7,000. There is some variation on the upper limit, but 10,000 is usually the maximum.

Novelette:
When a story becomes too long to be called short, it’s usually labeled as a novelette. Its length starts were short stories end and goes up to about 17,500 to 20,000 words. A novelette is a great length for when a short story runs long or there’s not enough material to pull off a novella

DEADLINE

The deadline is October 1st, and you have from now until midnight of the first to submit your stories.

Content Ideas

Here are ideas for the options open for the short stories!

Past:

Your story could take place before Fateful Night, perhaps telling about the early days for the Rostava siblings, how Viktor met Natalia, the back story of an abstract character, or maybe even a new one you created on your own to interact with the cast of Fateful Night.

Present:

You could write something that took place during the events covered in Fateful Night, maybe a scene from another character's perspective, maybe events that took place in the 1 year time jump that happened near the middle of the book, or perhaps an event or character entirely of your own making.

Future:

The last option would be something that took place after the book. Such as what happened to the characters and where they ended up, or maybe some events you created for them to experience, or perhaps a new set of characters who once interacted with the cast from Fateful Night.

The options are endless and artistic and creative liberties are welcome, so please don't feel like you might be messing up the book.

Please be aware that these stories need to remain kosher. (i.e. no swearing or inappropriate interactions between characters)

If there is a problem, I will be sure to contact you so that you have the chance to change it. If you'd rather not change it, the story will be disqualified from the competition because of content. Thanks so much!

On October 2nd I will post all of the short stories that were emailed to us!

The stories will be judged by our readers. They will be asked to rank the stories in the comments. When the judging is closed I'll send out a post that ranks each of the stories in the chosen order dictated by our readers!

I am so excited to read what y'all have, and I know our readers will be equally pleased.
